Posture is often blamed for migraines.
You’ve probably heard:
“Sit up straight”
“Fix your posture”
“That’s why you’re getting headaches”
There is some truth in it.
But it’s incomplete.
And that’s where people get stuck.
Because posture is not the problem in the way most people think.
It’s a reflection of what your body has adapted to over time.
Your body is not careless.
It doesn’t accidentally drift into poor posture.
It adapts.
If you:
sit for long periods
work at a screen
carry tension
have old injuries
Your body finds a position that allows you to cope.
That position may not be ideal long term.
But it is the best solution your body has found so far.
When your posture shifts, especially into a forward head position:
your neck muscles work harder
tension increases
movement becomes restricted
your nervous system becomes more sensitive
This doesn’t immediately cause a migraine.
But it increases the overall load on your system.
And over time, that contributes to migraines developing.
This is the one seen most often.
Your head moves slightly forward.
It doesn’t feel like much.
But even a small shift increases the load significantly.
Your muscles then have to:
work harder
stay active for longer
stabilise the area continuously
That creates constant low-level tension.
Most people try to correct posture by force.
They sit up straight.
They hold themselves rigid.
It works for a few minutes.
Then:
they get tired
they forget
they slip back
Because the underlying issue hasn’t changed.
Your body returns to what feels easiest and safest.
Posture improves when the system underneath improves.
That means:
If your body is under less pressure:
it doesn’t need to compensate as much
it can adopt more balanced positions
When your spine moves well:
tension doesn’t build as easily
muscles don’t need to overwork
When your nervous system is calmer:
your body doesn’t hold as much tension
posture becomes more natural
Chiropractic is not about forcing posture into place.
It is about improving how your spine functions so posture can change naturally.
When spinal function improves:
muscles relax
movement becomes easier
your body rebalances itself
That’s why people often say:

Posture is one part of your total load.
