“I’ve tried everything.”

“I’m too old.”

✔ Age makes healing slower — not impossible. I help people in their 60s, 70s, even 80s move freely again.

Why Gentle Chiropractic Works — Even After Months (or Years) of Pain

Your spine protects your nervous system — and your nervous system controls everything. When spinal movement is restricted or misaligned, it affects how your body heals, how it moves, and how it feels.

By restoring clear communication between your brain and body, gentle chiropractic helps:

  • Free up stiff joints and trapped nerves

  • Improve posture and movement

  • Calm the pain signals that won’t turn off

  • Support lasting healing — not just quick fixes

Your First Step Could Be the Easiest One Yet.

Your Secret Sense: How Your Spine Affects Body Awareness

October 30, 20252 min read

The Sense You Didn’t Know You Had

Close your eyes and touch your nose with your finger. Easy, right? That’s because of proprioception—your hidden “sixth sense” that tells your brain where your body parts are without needing to look.

It’s what lets you walk in the dark without tripping, or catch yourself if you stumble. When proprioception falters, life suddenly feels less steady.

The Nerves Behind Body Awareness

Proprioception relies on sensory receptors in your muscles, joints, and spine sending constant updates to your brain. These signals tell you about movement, position, and balance.

As physiologist Sir Charles Sherrington, who first coined the word “proprioception,” explained:
“The physical basis of all skill lies in the proprioceptive system.”

When the spine is aligned and moving well, proprioceptive signals are accurate. But when misaligned, irritated, or stiff, the brain receives scrambled information—and coordination suffers.

Did You Know?

When proprioception isn’t working properly, medics often describe it with terms like:

  • Dyspraxia– difficulty planning and coordinating movement.

  • Ataxia– clumsiness or unsteady movement.

  • Balance disorders– problems staying upright, especially in the dark or on uneven ground.

These conditions may sound clinical, but many everyday slips, stumbles, or feelings of clumsiness are just mild versions of the same underlying issue: disrupted proprioception.

How Spinal Misalignment Affects Proprioception

A misaligned spine can:

  • Distort feedback from spinal joints, sending “faulty” signals to the brain.

  • Irritate nerves that help muscles coordinate smoothly.

  • Reduce reflex speed, slowing your reactions when balance is challenged.

  • Increase fall risk, especially in older adults.

Common experiences include:

  • Feeling clumsy or uncoordinated.

  • Trouble walking in the dark.

  • Increased risk of tripping or stumbling.

  • Needing to look at your feet to know where they are.

Simple Support for Better Body Awareness

Proprioception thrives on movement and balance challenges.

Try this:
Stand on one leg while brushing your teeth (hold the sink for safety if needed). This playful habit wakes up your balance nerves and keeps your proprioception sharp.

Takeaway

Your hidden sense of body awareness is essential for balance, coordination, and safety. When spinal misalignment interferes with the nerves that carry proprioceptive signals, you may feel clumsy, unsteady, or prone to falls.

By looking after your spine, you’re protecting the very sense that helps you move confidently through the world.
